About CFMMH
The Center for Maternal Mental Health is a woman-centered psychological practice. We are committed to providing a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients to learn about issues such as Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders and Trauma-Related Disorders and to receive evidence-based treatment for them. At CFMMH we provide the therapy, information, and resources you need to remedy your mental health and recover your sense of self. As a women-centered practice we recognize that child birth and motherhood are unique experiences to women and we devote a significant amount of attention and care to helping mothers and their partners to address their mental health needs and to successfully adjust throughout all stages of their relationship and the perinatal period.
You are not alone. Child birth is a miraculous and life changing experience and like any other milestone, it can greatly change your person and your perspective. It is not uncommon for women to feel the love and adoration associated with giving new life, but also the worry and anxiety that comes with profound responsibility, the resentment and regret that comes with added responsibilities, and the discomfort of embracing the unknown.
You are not to blame. The thoughts and feelings you have due to child birth are not your fault. Hormonal imbalance, medical history, circumstantial situations, pregnancy complication and traumatic incidents can all trigger a change in your mental health.
You need not feel shame. It truly does take a village to raise a child, and it is unfair for a parent to feel responsible for carrying the burden of rearing a child alone. Throughout history, it has at times been frowned upon for a woman to require mental health or practical assistance after having a child, however, the benefits of having a support network and of being in therapy are undeniable.
